If you would like to apply to have your child or children Baptised at St Patricks or St Thomas, please complete our Request for Baptism Form – Updated March 2019 and return your completed form to the Parish Office at parish@stpatrick-summerhill.org.au  Both of our Churches are very popular for Baptisms so please allow at least one month’s notice to avoid disappointment and allow ample time to attend preparation. Please do not print invitations or confirm any personal arrangements until you have received written confirmation from the Parish Office that your preferred date is available.

Baptisms at Summer Hill are held at 9.00am, immediately after 8.00am Mass each Sunday. Baptisms at Lewisham are at 11.30am, immediately after 10.30am Mass each Sunday.

All families baptising their childrenare required to attend a Baptism Preparation Course. These courses are held on the last Saturday of each month from 10.30am to 11.30am in the Parish Office.

Please feel free to contact our Parish Secretary if you have any questions or require any further information. Please note we are not able to hold dates or confirm any arrangements until a Request for Baptism form has been completed and returned. Thank you for your understanding.

Sacraments for Children

First Reconciliation & First Holy Communion

Please note that registration for Reconciliation has now closed for 2019. You may still complete the online registration form, and we will contact you in late 2019 or early 2020.

Our preparation program recognizes that as parents, you are the first educators of your child, most especially in matters of Faith. Our program therefore is designed in such a way that you and your child are accompanied by the parish community in your child’s preparation for the sacraments. Therefore, the presence and active participation of one or both parents is required; the Catholic parent in a mixed religion family.

In order for your child to receive the sacrament they must complete the whole program with you. The program includes:

  • Attendance at a parent briefing session with Father Sam
  • Attendance and participation in four (4) preparation classes (3 classes and 1 retreat day for First Communion)
  • Attendance and participation at Sunday mass after each class

While allowances for genuine misadventure, sickness, etc can be arranged, it is important that if you commit to enroll your child, the program is prioritized over other activities such as sport, dancing or a weekend away during the month preceding the sacrament.

The weekly preparation sessions are held Saturday night from 5pm to 6pm followed by Mass for a period of four weeks as outlined below. To allow additional time for enrolments, we have delayed our original starting dates so please ensure you follow the timeline below rather than any previous correspondence.

Confirmation

To register for 2019, lease complete the attached Registration for Confirmation  . Our Confirmation ceremony will be held on Saturday 31st August 2019 at 11am. This will be a combined ceremony for both St Patricks and St Thomas and will be held in the presence of Bishop Terry Brady at St Thomas’ Catholic Church, Lewisham.

Confirmation is one of three Sacraments of Initiation which includes Baptism and Eucharist. In the Archdiocese of Sydney Confirmation is received after first Eucharist when the child is in Year 6 or older. Like Baptism, Confirmation is only received once, whereas Eucharist is received over and over every week.

Confirmation Preparation Program
The Sacraments are a wonderful gift to us from God inviting us into deeper intimacy. So that children can gain the full benefit of the experience, the preparation is vitally important. Candidates will participate in a series of preparation sessions prior to the event (dates below). If your child has extracurricular activities on the days for the preparation classes, please be sure to give the various coaches/instructors notice well ahead of time that your child will be attending the Sacrament Preparation classes on those days.

Sponsors
The Sacrament of Confirmation requires the candidate to choose a person to be their sponsor. This person cannot be their parent, must be at least 16 years of age and a confirmed Catholic who is a witness to the faith. As Confirmation is linked to Baptism, ideally the sponsor would be one of your child’s godparents. If this is not possible, another sponsor may be chosen.

Confirmation Ceremony
The Confirmation Ceremony takes approximately 1.5 hours and is followed by a group photograph with the Bishop. Families are then free to leave to celebrate further. Children are not required to buy special outfits for the Sacrament, however they are required to dress appropriately. A general guide is how they would dress to attend a family wedding. Boys should be in long trousers (not jeans), dark shoes (not runners), collared shirt. A tie is appropriate but not essential. Girls should be in a knee or ankle length dress or skirt/top (not denim) with their shoulders covered, with hair neatly arranged. No runners.

Enrolment
A copy of the child’s Baptism certificate is required as well as the permission of both parents. Please enroll using the form above, or if you prefer, visit the parish office where your details will be entered for you.

Cost
There are substantial expenses incurred by the parish in running the Sacrament program including administration, teaching resources, print materials and refreshments. The cost per child is $50, payable at the time of enrolment. No child however will ever be denied the opportunity to receive the Sacraments due to financial limitations. Families in difficult financial circumstances should contact the parish office to discuss their situation confidentially. Payment may be made in cash/cheque at the parish office, or at the first session.
